Putting it simply, children’s skin absorbs more than adult skin. This is because kids’ skin is about 20-30% thinner and has a less developed protective barrier, it is therefore much more permeable. This means substances like lotions, chemicals, and even UV rays penetrate their skin much more readily.
It is already quite generally known that most makeup products are not exactly good for the skin.
If our makeup items are made up of harsh chemical compounds, it can’t be great for our delicate skin, which makes it certainly less great for the developing skin of growing children. When you dive a little deeper than the skin, you’ll find just beneath the layers there are veins, arteries, muscles, soft tissues, lymph nodes, amongst a whole lot more. So, to begin by understanding that the skin is not separate from the internal body will already allow us to logically deduce that any number of foreign compounds may aggravate any other number of health conditions.
General ingredients that we want to steer clear of when choosing makeup products for children (and adults) would include heavy metals (even trace amounts) like Arsenic, Cadmium, Lead or Mercury; asbestos as a byproduct of Talc in topical items; other overly complicated molecules like formeldahyde, phthalates, and any synthetically produced compounds which includes the artificial fragrances (bug culprit of eczema) and flavours.
One of the most common culprits is mineral oil. Since mineral oil is a by-product of gasoline it means that there is a small chance that there are left over contaminants of petroleum and crude oil from the processing process. This is definitely not what you want to be putting on your kid’s delicate skin!
Don’t be fooled, mineral oil can also often be called Paraffinium Liquidum, Petrolatum or Paraffin on ingredient lists.
Hypoallergenic makeup is typically gentler on the skin, can often be fragrance-free (as fragrance can be irritating), and is sometimes derived from minerals. Minerals are considered “inert,” which means they won’t harbor bacteria or easily expire. One of the most common culprits of skin sensitivity and irritation is fragrance.
The most common irritants in makeup include parabens, phthalates, talc, and synthetic fragrance. Many hypoallergenic products are also made using minerals or botanical ingredients.
Luckily, this is the reason we exist!
As our little inspiration (sweet young Cassidy) wanted the same thing and her innovative mother didn’t want to get her the play makeup that was available in the retail market at the time. That is why she started creating her own formulations of natural, clean, non-toxic, mineral makeup.
If you do not want your child to have their own makeup yet, another sweet way to make them feel special is to add a few small non-toxic products to your own makeup kit for them to have something of yours they are allowed to play with.
