Mineral Oil sounds ok, but it’s definitely not!

So why is Mineral oil not ok and what does Cassie Kids use instead?

First of all mineral oil is a by-product of gasoline! This means it is a non-renewable resource which further means it is bad for our environment and just adds to the global crisis of pollution.

And since mineral oil is a by-product of gasoline it means that there is a small chance that there are left over contaminants of petroleum and crude oil from the processing process. This is definitely not what you want to be putting on your kid’s delicate skin!

The other reason that Cassie Kids doesn’t use mineral oil is because there are really no beneficial factors of mineral oil. This is because it sits on top of the skin, it doesn’t actually nourish the skin in any way whatsoever.

Even though now virtually all skin care product manufacturers use only pure cosmetic grade mineral oil in their products, there are so many other much, much better options out there.

Options include coconut oil, shea butter and olive oil. If a barrier on the skin is the intention of the product then we prefer to use oils that have larger molecules that can replicate mineral oil, but are so much better than mineral oil. Some of these larger-molecule oils include castor oil, avocado oil and even beeswax. But these alternatives are more expensive that mineral oil and that is why many commercially available cheap makeup for kids is made using mineral oil. The manufacturers don’t see much benefit in using slightly more expensive ingredients when a cheaper (although completely non-beneficial) option can do the same job.

Be aware when you are purchasing kids cosmetics (if its not from us!), mineral oil can also often be called Paraffinium Liquidum, Petrolatum or Paraffin on ingredient lists.

At the end of the day we don’t use mineral oil at all, ever!
