We often get moms asking if our makeup can be used with kids who have eczema. We can’t emphatically say yes or no, but what we can say is that our makeup is hypoallergenic.
But what does hypoallergenic mean anyway? Well for starters hypoallergenic isn’t a regulated term, but there are beauty products out there that don’t include ingredients (like fragrance or preservatives) known to cause skin irritation.
So “hypoallergenic” is not a regulated term with respect to labeling laws but what it’s supposed to mean is the product contains fewer ingredients that could potentially cause an allergic reaction — something called allergic contact dermatitis.
Hypoallergenic makeup is typically gentler on the skin, can often be fragrance-free (as fragrance can be irritating), and is sometimes derived from minerals. Minerals are considered “inert,” which means they won’t harbor bacteria or easily expire. One of the most common culprits of skin sensitivity and irritation is fragrance.
So what ingredients should you look for? The most common irritants in makeup include parabens, phthalates, talc, and synthetic fragrance. Many hypoallergenic products are also made using minerals or botanical ingredients.
So what’s the bottom line at Cassie Kids mineral makeup for kids? Our makeup is hypoallergenic because we don’t use synthetic fragrances, never use parabens, talc or phthalates and we use mostly mineral ingredients. We do use lavender essential oil for some of our body products, however none of our eye or cheek makeup has any essential oil at all. We do however recommend that if your child is prone to eczema then start with testing our makeup on the inside of their arm and if there is no irritation you should be good to go.
At the end of the day each child is different, however that shouldn’t mean that pretend play or imaginative play enhanced through kiddies makeup should be out of the question. We have a lovely range that you can choose from. And as always we are always happy to answer any questions at all!
